A few things our Republican-controlled General Assembly has done lately (all supported by Senator Tim Moffitt and Reps. Jennifer Balkcom and Jake Johnson).

-
Took away important powers from the Democratic governor and gave those powers to the Republican state auditor. Our governor is now one of the weakest in the US.
-
Gave the Republican state auditor power to audit elections, bypassing the Attorney General’s office.
-
Continue to implement restrictions on our right to vote, and further the gerrymandering of our state, making it one of the worst in the country.
-
Passed a budget, finally, that does some things right but also:
-
Cut 1,000 state jobs, leaving severe vacancies in the State Police and other public safety offices
-
Pushed unfunded mandates onto local governments (as they attempt to take away local governments’ abilities to raise taxes)
-
Eliminated the vehicle emissions inspection requirement in North Carolina, pending EPA approval (emissions inspections are required in 19 counties, including Buncombe, but not Henderson)
-
Redirected almost all Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) funds away from civil legal aid programs and into the state’s criminal defense Private Assigned Counsel fund. IOLTA uses interest generated from unearned client funds (held in escrow) to pay for civil legal aid to low‑income people who cannot afford an attorney. In 2025, it distributed about $12 million in grants, reaching tens of thousands of people across all 100 counties
-
Pushed unfunded mandates onto local governments (as they attempt to take away local governments’ abilities to raise taxes)
-
Continue to weaken controls on gun ownership, turn a blind eye to gun violence and the illegal sale of guns to criminals, and to ignore the toll gun violence takes on our citizens.
-
Took zoning control from community governments
-
Gave $650 million to private schools, which receive no state oversight

It's past time to break the Republican control of our General Assembly. Vote for Doyle Brown, Senate, and Lynne Russo or John Morgan, Representatives.
