As families struggle with the potential loss of SNAP benefits & other economic hardships, Henderson County Dems and Friends will be collecting food donations for community members to pick up at our new office.
Due to a combination of events, we expect to see a dramatic increase in food insecurity throughout Henderson County in the coming months. Despite efforts from NC Attorney General Jeff Jackson and others, the fate of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) remains uncertain due to the government shutdown. Rising prices and a poor job market are compounding the problem.Â
You may drop off donations during office hours, which are Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm.
Our new office is at 2024 Asheville HWY, Unit F next to The Ugly Mug and Monte’s Subs. This is the little strip mall just above Ingles.
To keep up with inventory and to make sure we have what our community needs, we are asking folks to limit donations to the following individually packaged items that do not require refrigeration or food prep (other than microwaving).Â

We’re looking for relatively nutritious items that are easy to store. Also, please consider gluten-free, nut-free and vegetarian options for children with dietary restrictions.
For those who prefer or need an online option, we have a wish list available on Amazon. Please order items to be delivered to your home and then drop them off at the office.
Please help us spread the word about this great resource for families in our community!
Finally, we invite you to help us remind people that Democrats are not responsible for the federal shutdown. Republicans control all branches of government and could end it at any time. Democrats are fighting for a budget that protects healthcare benefits, and they are also fighting to protect SNAP benefits during the shutdown. As Governor Josh Stein has said: "SNAP is a lifeline for families across the country. It puts food on the table, supports local farmers and grocers, and strengthens our economy."
