Leadership Profile: Sally Haas, Treasurer

Sally Schubert Haas has deep roots in Henderson County. She first began visiting in 1959 after her grandparents retired here from Chicago. She remembers going to a play at Flat Rock Playhouse when it was housed in a tent and seating was “in the round.” In the 1970s, Sally’s grandparents were among the first to move to Carolina Village.

Sally continued vacationing in Hendersonville every year, staying at Florilina Court, which is now The Cottages of Flat Rock.

In 2020, she and her husband, Jim, bought a condo in South Asheville and began splitting their time between Orlando and Asheville. In 2022, they purchased a condo in The Oaks on Haywood Road. “Now, after more than 60 years of being a tourist, I am finally a year-round resident of Hendersonville,” she said.

Sally was raised by Republicans and was herself a Republican. “Then Obama ran in 2008, and I realized I was in the wrong party. Since then, I’ve become increasingly interested in politics. In 2016 I realized that we all needed to be activists if we want to save our democracy.”

With a degree in accounting and 40 years of accounting experience, Sally feels she can best give back by staying in her lane and so she volunteered to serve as HCDP Treasurer. As treasurer, she collects funds, provides financial statements and reports to the State Board of Elections. Most importantly, she ensures that money is used wisely so HCDP can spend as much as possible on voter outreach and other things that make a difference.

Since becoming involved, Sally has made many new Democratic friends, especially in her neighborhood. She has fully immersed herself, serving as a delegate to the County and District conventions and attending rallies and precinct activities.

“I feel it is imperative that everyone who values democracy should become active in the fight to save it.”

Sally and Jim have five children between them (from 32 to 60 in age), two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. They enjoy eating out and spending time with their Bichon Frise, Molly.
