Reid Barwick Announces Campaign for Henderson County Board of Education

ree

Hendersonville, NC – Reid Barwick has officially announced his candidacy for a seat on the Henderson County Public Schools Board of Education.

Barwick says his campaign is driven by a concern that too many students are graduating unprepared for life beyond school. He emphasizes the need for pathways outside of college, including trade skills, vocational programs, and practical knowledge that lead to independence and meaningful work.

“If a student isn’t college-bound, it seems there are too few pathways shown to them. Too many graduate without the basic life or trade skills, or the accountability they need to earn a living wage, contribute meaningfully to their community, or feel pride in their work and themselves.”

A Career of Diverse Experience

Barwick’s professional background ranges from executive management in corporate hospitality procurement for resorts and casinos, to logistics and retail work in warehouses, grocery aisles, and package delivery. Across industries, he has witnessed the same troubling pattern: young people entering the workforce unprepared, unmotivated, and lacking the problem-solving skills to succeed.

As a grandfather to public school students and the husband of a lifelong educator and nurse, Barwick says his campaign is also personal.

Vision for Henderson County Schools

If elected, Barwick’s priorities will include:

  • Expanding vocational education and career pathways.

  • Strengthening financial literacy and practical skills in the curriculum.

  • Building student confidence alongside academic achievement.

  • Supporting and respecting teachers with the resources they need to succeed.

  • Addressing the challenges of technology and AI as part of preparing students for a changing economy.

“My goal as a school board member is to challenge our community—not just our schools—to expect more for our children, our grandchildren, and the legacy we leave behind. We need to aspire for greatness in every student’s chosen path, not just test scores or college admissions.”

Looking Ahead

Barwick believes Henderson County’s economic future will depend on how well its schools prepare students for service-based industries, trades, and emerging opportunities. His candidacy, he says, is about ensuring every child has a fair, safe, and well-rounded education.
