Running for Us: Doyle Brown, Candidate for NC State Senate

Our 2026 Running for Us series of candidate interviews continues with a Q&A featuring Doyle Brown, candidate to represent District 48 in the NC Senate. Doyle first became interested in leadership and advocacy in college when he served as chapter president of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, one of the legendary Divine Nine African American fraternities and sororities.

Doyle moved to our area in 2012 to raise his daughters and be closer to family. As a real estate developer, he is actively involved in providing affordable housing while partnering with community organizations that provide resources to help families thrive.

HCDP: Thanks for joining us, Doyle! Could you explain how your professional role of working in area real estate relates to your campaign goals?

DOYLE: I am passionate about providing workforce-affordable housing, especially in this time when people are really struggling to make it. I could do this work all day long and never get tired of it. People work with dignity every day and they should be able to afford to live where they work, but Western North Carolina is losing a lot of workers to South Carolina because they can’t afford to live here.

In addition to my current projects here, I have a background working with similar initiatives, including working with a non-profit on Long Island that addressed homelessness.  I’m truly steeped in advocacy and I get a lot of pleasure from working in our community.    

HCDP: You are running against incumbent Republican Tim Moffitt to represent Henderson, Polk, and Rutherford Counties in the NC Senate.  How would you explain the role of serving as a state senator and how would you do it differently than our current senator?

DOYLE: The primary responsibility of a state senator is to dutifully serve their constituents, to fight for what they need.  The second is to make decisions that help all North Carolinians. I will be an active representative that people can call to voice their concerns, and that includes conservatives, too, by the way. It includes everyone. Tim Moffitt has not done anything to improve the quality of life for our neighbors. He did not, for example, object to Duke Power’s request for an 18 percent increase in our energy bills. Why should we pay more than the Eastern part of the state? Why should we pay more than data centers? We should only pay for what we use. People are getting squeezed from every angle and he’s done nothing.

Another passion of mine is public education.  I believe the North Carolina General Assembly hasn’t made the right decisions for students and teachers.  Teacher pay is just one example—we’re near the bottom of the list. The General Assembly does not acknowledge or respect the fortitude and dedication of the people who are doing the sacred job of teaching our students.

Fundamentally speaking, it’s an atrocity that North Carolina is the only state in the nation not to have an operating budget. 

HCDP: You’ve said that reading Obama’s book and hearing him speak as a state senator served as a type of catalyst for you in terms of becoming more involved in politics. How did you make the decision to actually run for office?  

DOYLE: Well, I always tried to stay abreast of what was going on, and I gradually started diving into trying to understand why people vote the way they do.  Then in 2023 I signed up for a series of seminars that, in hindsight, were really designed to build up a reservoir of people who might run for office. . . .In 2024, I ran for school board (in Rutherford). I didn’t win but I learned a lot and it was a good experience.  It gave me some of the skills that are helping in this campaign.

HCDP: You use some cool campaign slogans. Care to share a few?

DOYLE: Of course I will! My big one is that I will Put YOUR STREET Ahead of WALL STREET.  I also like to say that We Are All Signal, No Noise and It’s Time to Change the Paradigm in Politics. 

HCDP: Last question: When someone does manage to pull you away from your business and advocacy work, what do you enjoy doing? 

DOYLE: I love being a dad! I’m a single father to two daughters and they are my pride and joy.  They are the apple of my eye, and they go to a lot of my campaign events with me.  I moved here for them and that was one of the best decisions of my life. The community has embraced me.  I’ve been involved in PTA, booster clubs.  I’ve coached basketball and soccer. I like to bowl, play basketball, travel. In Hendersonville, we like to explore Main Street, especially getting frozen yogurt.  That’s kind of a nostalgia thing for them. Now I am enjoying getting to know all the little communities throughout the district and that’s been fun, too.
